Nokia launches world's smallest dual band phone for GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks
June 01, 1998
The Nokia 6150 provides innovative features and industry-leading performance
Nokia today announced the launch of the Nokia 6150 GSM 900/1800 dual band mobile phone, which incorporates all the innovative features of the famous Nokia 6100 product family. The Nokia 6150 is the smallest GSM 900/1800 dual band phone on the market, yet it provides impressive performance. The new product will be available in volume in the third quarter of 1998.
The Nokia 6150 operates on three different types of networks: GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 900/1800 dual band networks. The phone automatically chooses the best available service channel, and the handover between 900 MHz and 1800 MHz networks takes place seamlessly, even during the call within the same operator. In densely populated urban areas, the dual band operation provides increased network capacity. The Nokia 6150 gives the users the widest roaming possibilities in Europe and Asia, with more networks to choose from.
"For the customer, the Nokia 6150 dual band phone means great flexibility in high traffic environments, such as city centers. With extra capacity, more phone calls are likely to get through and the voice quality is better. These arrangements improve the usability of the phone considerably and bring real benefit without requiring any extra effort from the user. For the operator, dual band service offers more capacity in congested areas and an opportunity for price and service differentiation," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.
The design and features of the Nokia 6150 match the other phones of the Nokia 6100 product family. As with other Nokia 6100 products, the Nokia 6150 provides superb audio and speech quality through leak tolerant speaker and acoustic echo cancellation technology, and supports all three wireless voice codecs: enhanced full rate (EFR) for improved voice quality; half-rate and full rate.
The Nokia 6150 supports smart messaging applications through text-based Internet access, which enables the use of value-added services such as news, stock quotes and sports results, delivered by the operators. The new Nokia phone also allows users to send and receive business cards, as well as download ringing tones over the air. Under the "Services" menu, there are three menu items (Operator Services, Nokia Services, Personal Bookmarks) which can be dynamically customized over the air. Text-based Internet access is a network operator dependent service.
The unique Profile function in the Nokia 6100 GSM phones enables users to adjust the phone settings according to various situations, with caller grouping and caller group identification through different ringing tones and graphics. The calendar in the Nokia 6100 GSM phones allows the user to record appointments and write notes. These notes, as well as short messages, can be sent and printed out using the built-in infrared port. The Nokia Cellular Data Suite version 1.2 is available for the Nokia 6150 and other phones in the Nokia 6100 series, enabling data connection without cables through the infrared port or the PC's serial port.
The built-in calculator can be used for simple calculations and currency conversion. Also designed for fun, the Nokia 6100 GSM phones include three games: Snake, Logic and Memory.
Based on true 3-volt technology, the Nokia 6150 offers industry-leading performance. With the standard Li-Ion battery, the phone weighs 142 grams and stands by for up to 260 hours (eleven days) while the talk time is up to 4 hours 30 minutes. Batteries and accessories for the Nokia 6150 are compatible with the other Nokia 6100 phones.
The Nokia 6150 will be available in a variety of colors: Black, Eloxal Blue and Chameleon Green for Europe, and Black, Eloxal Blue and Eloxal Raspberry for Asia-Pacific markets. More than 30 language options and 36 ringing tones are available for the Nokia 6150.
Nokia's dual band network capabilities are well proven. In 1997, Nokia introduced the world's first GSM 900/1800 dual band base stations with full type approval. Like the existing Nokia base stations, the Nokia GSM 900/1800 dual band base station can be deployed under the same Nokia base station controller (BSC) and mobile switching centre (MSC), and the entire system can be managed under the same Nokia NMS/2000 Network Management System. Since both GSM 900 and 1800 networks are capable of utilizing the same value-added features, services, network planning and measurement tools, sites and transmission links, the operator can expect significant network cost savings. Nokia has supplied dual band functionality to a number of the world's leading GSM operators.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.
